Stay Fresh
If you’re like most women, you probably hold onto your makeup until it’s gone. It’s hard to part with favorite items, especially if they’re discontinued, but using old, expired products may actually have negative results and cause skin issues!
So what should you throw out and how often should you do it? Some makeup items have a longer shelf life than others. Here’s a simple reference:
Foundation - Every year
Concealer - Every year
Blush/Bronzer - Every 2 years for powder and every year for cream
Eyeshadow - Replace it every 2 years for powder and every year for cream
Eyeliner - Every 6 months if applied with a brush and every year for pencils
Mascara - Every 3 months (this product is the most likely to have bacteria and cause infections)
Lipstick/Lip Gloss - Every 6 months to a year
You can extend the lifespan of your makeup by
Keeping all products in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight.
Always applying makeup with brushes or sponges, as fingers can transfer bacteria.
Cleaning all brushes and sponges once a week. (Baby shampoo works really well!)
Washing your hands before applying your makeup.
